A small but fine hike above Ersa at the northwestern end of Cap Corse to the picturesque windmill "Moulin Mattei". The recently restored mill stands in a beautiful panoramic location on the hill of Col de la Serra at 400 m. A visit can be perfectly combined with the small circular hike on the scenic plateau, past the shrine with a beautiful statue of Mary out to the edge of the plateau with a fantastic view over the wide bay of Port Centuri with the adjoining nature reserves around the Iles du Cap Corse.
From the Col de la Serra parking lot, at the turnoff of the main road D 80, go up the track to the right to the hill with the picturesque windmill "Moulin Mattei," which is surrounded by stunning Mediterranean maquis and sits alone on the hill in a magnificent location. It is not only a silent witness to past difficult times but also an advertising emblem for the aperitif "Cap Corse." In 1834, the mill was struck by lightning and almost destroyed. Decay threatened because it was only purchased a century later by the Mattei family and restored by Louis Napoléon Mattei, the inventor of the aperitif Cap Corse, securing its preservation. Half a century later, it became dilapidated again, was acquired in 2004 by the Conservatoire du littoral, and restored to its 1930 state. It has thus become a real gem, standing as a reminder at Col de la Serra and is a worthwhile destination for many visitors and a romantic photo subject.
