It was the year 1882 when a severe storm with extreme heavy rain completely washed away the cart path between Thalerhof and Aschbach – which had already been interrupted by a previous thunderstorm. And not only that: a huge notch was formed in the massive moraine deposits that Ice Age glaciers had pressed into the Lahn valley at Hochnall 20,000 years ago. The debris of these glaciers consists of stones of very different sizes, including large blocks of tonalite, a plutonic rock that forms parts of the Rieserferner group. Where these resistant rock blocks protected the finer material underneath from the pounding raindrops, columns of moraine material remained standing, while the immediate surroundings were deeply washed out. This process is not finished, especially since some of the capstones are quite shaky candidates...
Opposite the parking lot, 1440 m, a marked hiking trail to the earth pyramids begins, quickly gaining altitude in the forest. Shortly after crossing the Kammerer stream, we ignore the left-turning path to the Gönner Alm and continue straight on the P1 path. When we meet an asphalt path, we follow it to the left, then leave it again to the right at the next bend. This brings us to the upper viewing platform, 1560 m, at the earth pyramids. A path secured with wooden railings leads to a lower platform that offers new perspectives on the earth pyramids – which are mostly actually earth columns. For the return, we climb back to the upper platform and return along the same known route.
