The stage hike "Pirminiusweg" leads through gently rising forest areas, picturesque villages, and idyllic monasteries. A detour to France is also included in the nearly 27-kilometer-long hike.
The Pirminius Trail runs from the monastery town of Hornbach in the tri-border area of Rhineland-Palatinate, Lorraine, and Saarland. The start is at the Pirminius Hall in Hornbach. The hiking trail is characterized by changing landscapes of forests, meadows, and fields. Hills with magnificent views, idyllic nature-protected valley meadows with old mills testify to the charm of the region.
CAREFUL! - Campaign for respectful coexistence in nature
- Always behave considerately, kindly, and respectfully towards everyone you meet on the way.
- Take care of nature, do not destroy plants, and always stay on the paths. Try to avoid excessive noise and leave the forest before dusk.
- Remember a trash bag for on the way and take your litter back home.
- Always keep your dog on a leash. Other visitors and animals will thank you.
- Observe all path closures for your own safety, even on weekends.
- Only park in designated parking areas. Leave space for emergency vehicles and agricultural machinery.
- Give priority to land and forestry traffic.
Author’s recommendation
The monastery town of Hornbach offers good accommodation options and a diverse culinary range from Mediterranean, German-French cuisine to exquisite dishes and hearty traditional fare.
A visit to the Gimpelwald hut of the Palatinate Forest Association is also worthwhile. On the French side, you can dine at the Eschviller Mill or at the Auberge du Parc (3 km from the trail from Ormersviller) in Epping.
The Pirminius Trail can be hiked in two stages. The short route is marked. The start of the second stage is at the hiking parking lot in the forest near Altheim. The trail is well signposted, with the Pirminius symbol in Germany and a red triangle from the height near Ormersviller in France.

General information:
Especially in autumn, be aware that fallen leaves on the ground can conceal unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. After thunderstorms or heavy rain, trees may still fall or branches may fall down afterwards. Particularly under adverse weather conditions, muddy and slippery sections can occur on natural paths. Not all rocks or ravines are secured with ropes or railings. Surefootedness is required in places. You have to expect impairments of this kind when undertaking a hike. If you think certain sections of the path are not passable for you, you should avoid them.
NOTE:
We strive to announce all closures due to forest work or hunting societies on this platform. Nevertheless, there are situations where trails are closed and we may not have been informed. If you unexpectedly encounter a trail closure or diversion, please heed the instructions for your own safety.

Roadbook
The hiking trail bears the name of Saint Pirminius, the patron saint of the Palatinate. As early as the year 742, the wandering monk established a Benedictine abbey in this enchanting landscape. The multimedia monastery museum illustrates the Middle Ages and life in Hornbach amidst the cultural site of the monastery. The Pirminius Hall of the monastery town of Hornbach is the starting point of our hike. The character of the Pirminius Trail can be described as restrained – and that suits it perfectly! We hike up to the edge of the Burger Forest, from where we have a magnificent view of Hornbach. On forest paths, we reach the next hill and walk along meadows into a magnificent mixed forest, the Great Forest. From the forest, we descend to Brenschelbach. After passing through the village, we soon reach the German-French border. About 50 m from the hiking trail stands probably the oldest boundary stone in the region, the so-called Sweden Stone from 1597. We reach Ormersviller for the first time. Above the village, we climb towards a wind turbine, pass the Peace Cross, and are briefly in Germany again. In a curve, we return to France. Ahead of us, we already see the Chapelle St. Joseph, which we reach after a few minutes. A beautiful place with views of the Sickinger Höhe and the Lorraine plateau. After walking through Ormersviller for the second time, we head towards the distinctive water tower and descend after a short but steep section into the Schwalb valley with the Schwalbaue nature reserve. We walk along a former railway line past the Eschviller Mill. A detour to the mill with its museum and culinary offerings should definitely be planned. Continuing along the Schwalbaue, we pass the Lutzviller Mill and are again in Germany near the Blumenauer Mill. Brenschelbach station is soon reached, and we walk up the gently ascending road. After a small forest area, we are surrounded by meadows and fields again. From the next hill, the Vosges View, we have another wonderful panoramic view of the surrounding landscape. We follow the ridge to the forest edge and descend into the Becherbach valley with the idyllic pond. Even though it is not far to the destination, here we must rest once more and let the peace affect us. Finally, we pass by the Gimpelwald hut of the Palatinate Forest Association. At the forest hut, a path leads downhill and brings us back to the starting point of this wonderful hike.
