From the parking next to the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena, attached to an ancient hospice that welcomed travelers, descend through the countryside (trail marker 501) and, after crossing a small bridge, start climbing the steep slopes of the eastern side of the Monti Prenestini. Continue through the vegetation crossing some small clearings called 'are', once used for cleaning grains. After about 4.5 km the path joins the Karol Wojtyla Trail, coming from Pisoniano; continue in a steep climb for a few hundred meters until you reach the Mentorella Sanctuary, perched on a rock spur. Besides the very ancient church, do not miss visiting the mysterious cave where, it is said, Saint Benedict lived, and the Chapel of Sant’Eustachio, built at the highest point, from which the view over the Giovenzano Valley is truly spectacular.
Author’s recommendation
Continuing on the paved road, or occasionally tracing across the slopes, in just over 1 km you reach Guadagnolo where you can have lunch at one of the excellent small restaurants.
