The Pielach, coming from the foothills of the Alps, cuts through a narrow valley in the southern foothills of the Bohemian Massif (Dunkelsteinerwald) before joining the waters of the Danube at Melk. Hiking through the gorge with the nature park »Sophienhain« (created by the Montecuccoli counts) offers probably the most lasting impressions during the flowering season in spring. Our hiking destination, the village of Mauer located in a side valley of the Pielach, boasts a magnificent winged altar carved from linden wood (1510) in its parish church.
From Haunoldstein on a red-marked asphalt road, past an old mill heading north out of the village, then across fields to the Pielach bridge. Beyond it, turn left onto a marked footpath along the Pielach, through floodplain forest to the Pielach houses with crossing asphalt road. Follow it (marked red and blue-yellow-blue) keeping left to the village end, then on a grassy forest road westwards to the Pielach valley gorge and from there into the forest. Along the road to the right of the stream, past the Osterburg below, through the gorge, then northwestwards through the »Sophienhain«, finally across meadows towards Neuhofen, 250 m. On an asphalt road northwards over fields uphill to Reiserhof. Before it, turn left and northwestwards over a hill to a fork (crucifix). Take the yellow-marked field path on the right downhill northwards, later crossing a ditch (with a Marian image) and up to the church of Mauer standing off the village, 300 m.
