The small town of Steyregg, a mountain peak, and an idyllically situated former monastery

The trail hike in the municipality of Steyregg—which can also be done as a loop hike—offers, in its first section, beautiful views first of Linz and then toward the Enns River; on a clear day, you can see all the way to the Alps. Especially near the Daxleitner Inn, a wonderful panoramic view of the Mühlviertel opens up.

From the Steyregg train station (Linz–Freistadt–Budweis line), we first walk along Bahnhofsstraße toward the town center, then turn left at the cemetery, following the cemetery wall past the parish hall to the church. Turning left, a modern Way of the Cross featuring steel sculptures (marked by the Pfenningberg Summit Trail, red-white-red) leads us uphill through the mountain settlement, past the flood control reservoir (with a magnificent view to the south), to the end of the Way of the Cross, a large stone circle. Keeping to the left as we head uphill into the forest, we follow the Pfenningberg Summit Hiking Trail (red-white-red) and encounter marker 51 (red-white-red) in the woods; following this, we cross a small stream and head uphill to the Burger-Brauner farm. In a right-hand curve, we come upon the Donausteig and the AV marker 50 and follow the farm road, which climbs gently at first. At a junction with a massive oak tree on the right, the Pfenningberg Summit Trail turns left
