Pfannnock from the Brunnachhöhe
The Pfannnock lacks much of the typical shape of most Nock mountains: Viewed from the Rosennock, the summit is quite pointed, and from the Brunnachhöhe it resembles a church roof. In any case, it's a beautiful and therefore popular mountain. The hike is very rewarding and varied, leading over peaks and ridges and further through spruce, larch, and Swiss pine forests. There are rustic huts and cozy spots by romantic mountain lakes.
From the valley station of the Brunnach Biosphere Park cable car, we ascend to the mountain station at 1900 m. At the top, we turn right towards the Mallnock. To the left we see the Rosennock, at 2440 m the highest Nock mountain in Carinthia. At the Brunnachgatter, 2020 m, at the foot of the Mallnock, before the steep climb to the summit, we branch left towards Rote Burg. We see the Pfannnock ahead and reach the Pfann Lakes at 2065 m through beautiful mixed larch and Swiss pine forest. Soon the path becomes a bit steeper. From the lakes, we reach the summit of Pfannnock at 2254 m in about 40 minutes over a small saddle. A magnificent panorama delights us up here on the summit plateau, which – quite atypical for the otherwise broad Nock summits – is rather small. Back at the Pfann Lakes, we branch right towards Arkersattel. At the Oswalder Bockhütte, 1845 m, we take a break and enjoy a delicious Kaiserschmarrn with Grantn, what cranberries are called here.
