The Pfaffenstein was already settled early on. Excavations uncovered finds from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age. Later, it served as a refuge castle for residents during wartime. This hike leads from Königstein to the Diebskeller, the largest cave, as well as to the Barbarine, the highest rock needle, of Saxon Switzerland.
In Königstein, we go over Reißigerplatz, Hainstraße, and Pirnaer Straße to Bielatalstraße and follow it up to Cunnersdorfer Straße, which leads steeply upwards. At the first bend, at Charlottenburg, we turn onto the forest path marked with a red dot. At Quirl, a small table mountain, we come across the Diebskeller. This layer fissure cave is protected as a geological natural monument.After a loop around the Quirl, we head to the Pfaffenstein, which rises sharply over the fields with its numerous climbing peaks. We gain the plateau on the Klamm-Weg. The Pfaffenstein is also a table mountain. In a hollow lies the mountain inn Fels Pfaffenstein, next to it the sandstone-built observation tower. From there we take a detour south to the Barbarine, a particularly attractive rock needle. It was first climbed in 1905; today climbing is prohibited due to severe weathering.
