The extensive area around the Watles summit is one of the most popular hiking destinations in Obervinschgau. Thanks to the cable car, the scenic and mighty summit and the surrounding alpine pastures are easily accessible without much effort. For refreshments, there is a restaurant at the mountain station and a managed alpine hut just below on the grassy slope. Transitions to the neighboring valleys and hut destinations are also possible, as well as beautiful circular hikes.
Take the chairlift from Watles valley station to the mountain station. From there, a comfortable path (No. 4) leads uphill northeast from the Plantapatsch Hut. At the fork, turn right. You reach the depression with the large Pfaffensee and several smaller lakes in the vicinity. From here you have a beautiful view of the Ötztal glacier mountains.Our path follows the south shore of Pfaffensee, which lies very idyllically in a basin. Just below is a second small lake. You hike from the shore of the large lake over wide slopes (No. 4a) uphill to the ridge of Schafberg, 2411 m. This forms a gentle dome on the long northeast ridge of Watles. Then you follow a beautiful, scenic hike with moderate incline along the broad ridge (No. 9) and reach Watles, with summit cross and wonderful view.The descent first goes gently over flat ground southwest into a depression, then steeper, always keeping left of the lift facilities, down a narrow path (No. 9).
