Exposed and steep through the rock walls of the Hochtor massif

Once, the daring poacher Andreas Rodlauer could miraculously escape his pursuers again and again through the high, seemingly impenetrable rock walls in Haindlkar. In 1877, Heinrich Heß, together with a local guide, succeeded in the first official ascent through the walls. The guide's name was Andreas Rodlauer, and indeed it was the former poacher! One thing has not changed since the times of Heß and Rodlauer: vertigo-free and sure-footedness are absolutely necessary for these two Gesäuse classics – the Petern Path and the Waterfall Trail!

The first part of the trail leads us from the Haindlkar parking lot, 600 m, towards the Haindlkar hut: We follow the path marked by a wooden sign past the parking lot, passing the valley station of the material cable car and hike through a stream bed higher up into the cirque. The path leads us into another cirque, then over scree cones with unpleasantly loose debris uphill and into the rocks, where we orient ourselves by the red dots set at regular intervals.Interspersed with easy climbing sections (difficulty grades I to II), the route winds up over the rock mass. At the key section, the very exposed "Ennstaler Step," we traverse a rock to the right with good
