A quiet path to the favorite mountain of the Viennese

The hamlet of Hinternaßwald, located in a side branch of the Schwarzatal ("Höllental"), is the center of a strictly protected water protection, forestry, and hunting area. Anyone who wants to go from there to the Rax and the Habsburghaus chooses either the normal access via the Kaisersteig or the partially secured Peter-Jokel-Steig. Although this avoids the monotonous road march of the normal route through the Reißtal, it requires mountaineering experience when ascending the steep forest and rock faces of the Scheibwaldmauer. Located on a scenic shoulder on the western edge of the Rax plateau, the Habsburghaus of the ÖAV mountain club is a fascinating lookout, a "throne of the gods" over abysmally deep valleys with a wonderful view of the Mürzsteger, Türnitzer, Gutensteiner, and Ybbstaler mountains. The generally long approaches make it a recommendable destination, especially since it is hardly ever crowded on weekends.

From the parking lot in Hinternaßwald, walk a few meters on the village road to a fork. Left onto the red-marked, closed to all traffic, gravel forest road (trail no. 44) into the Reißtal and soon to the Peter-Jokel-Steig, where we turn left (trail no. 46). Follow the red-marked path over a wooded ridge in steep hairpin bends under the walls of the Scheibwaldmauer and then turn right into a greened gully. Ascend it in switchbacks, later in the forest turn left (north) onto a ledge. Continue to a shoulder, then keeping right below the walls back into the mentioned gully. Upward through it in loops. Later to the right to a craggy ridge in the middle of the gully and climb easily under the blocking wall, finally on a path to the left to the next shoulder. Beyond in wooded terrain under the walls to the entrance of the Lower Jokelsteig cave. Turn right into a gully and ascend 10 m through it (wire rope), then right (south) in rocky-wooded terrain, finally ascend 15 m through an earthy
