In the Middle Ages, Pembridge was an influential economic center that even surpassed Leominster in size and importance. During the turbulent relations with Wales, Pembridge served as a secure trading place for wool between the English and the Welsh. When a certain peace prevailed during the reign of Henry VIII, the steady decline of the community began. And when the Industrial Revolution began, Pembridge was already in a Sleeping Beauty slumber that preserved its history. Most of the black-and-white houses in the village date from the 15th and 16th centuries, the covered market hall in front of the New Inn also originates from the 16th century and is one of the few of its kind still in such good condition. But Pembridge can boast more historical gems: Our hiking trail passes near the church by the moat of a long-ruined castle, and recent excavations have brought Roman roof tiles to light. Finally, our hike leads us to the almshouses, which were built at the end of the 17th century for the poor of the village.
From the Red Lion Inn in Pembridge on the A44, we turn left in front of the New Inn into the road leading to Bearwood and Luntley. Immediately, the wooden market hall catches the eye; at its height, we turn left through a small alley towards St Mary Church and then make a right curve around it. Along the way, we see an old wall and behind it the old castle moat. At the southwest corner of the cemetery, we pass through a metal swing gate, follow the hedge, and cross a stile under an oak tree. Next to a pond, we arrive at another pasture and go straight ahead towards some larger trees in the hedge to our right. Here we already see a stile in the bushes. Along the fence, we walk through the cider orchard to a stile under poplars and to the road, which we turn right onto. At the first tree on the left side, we access a field path along a hedge. At the end of the field, we cross two stiles within a few meters to walk again along the edge of the field at a right angle to the way we just came.
