This hike is particularly suitable for excursions with children due to its moderate physical demands and numerous attractions such as the pilgrimage church, Arnstein Cave, Arnstein ruins, part of the theme trail “Climbing”, playground and lookout at the Peilstein hut, Peilstein climbing area, as well as because of the extensive views (Arnstein ruins, Peilstein), low objective dangers, and gastronomy offerings (Peilstein hut, two guest establishments in Holzschlag). Those who find the route too short can choose Mayerling (45 min longer) or Heiligenkreuz (another 50 min longer) as a starting point. These extensions follow the well-marked and heavily trafficked WWW 06 trail, which in this area coincides with the “Via Sacra” from Vienna to Mariazell.
Author’s recommendation
What was common in the 1920s and 1930s, spending a night in the spacious Arnstein Cave, still represents a special experience for children today. Regarding gastronomy, both the Peilstein hut keeper Peter (http://peilsteinhaus.gebirgsverein.at) and the Lenz family at the Gasthof am Holzschlag (http://www.gasthofamholzschlag.com) have a lot to offer.

Safety information
The marked hiking trail involves no dangers. However, especially with children, caution is advised on the detours to the Arnstein Cave, the highest point of the Arnstein wall, and the Peilstein walls.Roadbook
From Maria Raisenmarkt, follow the paved road to Kreith northwest and after about 300 meters (signpost) turn onto the continuation hiking trail 01 or 06. After 450 meters, you reach a moderately ascending fork below the Arnstein ruins and then follow WWW 01 steeper towards the Peilstein hut. After about 300 meters, you reach rocks and cross beneath them to the Arnstein Cave (photo), which resembles more a large cave-like niche at the foot of the Arnstein wall. Then return to the trail marker and, after a few minutes, reach the remains of Arnstein Castle. It is worth climbing the few, partly steep and finally exposed meters to the highest point of the castle hill to enjoy a magnificent view, including the bizarre Peilstein needle. The further route leads us mostly moderately ascending and crossing the asphalt road Schwarzensee - Holzschlag after 1.3 km to the junction to Holzschlag (WWW 04), from which - now on the theme path “Climbing” - only 600 meters remain. In addition to visiting the hospitable Peilstein hut, one should not miss walking the 200 flat meters to the upper edge of the Peilstein walls (summit cross) and taking a look at Hocheck, the upper Triesting valley and the pilgrimage site Hafnerberg. The return path leads us back a bit on the ascent path, but then we follow the junction to Holzschlag, a small village we reach 1.2 km from the Peilstein summit. From the wayside shrine at the junction WWW 04 and 06 follow a paved road downhill between houses and then through the forest towards Raisenmarkt, where after 1.5 km under the Arnstein ruins we rejoin our ascent path, which brings us back to our starting point Raisenmarkt after just under a kilometer.
