Paukaneva is a mire in Seinäjoki, west of Nurmo center. The area features a lookout tower and a boardwalk route, which serves as a nature hiking trail. The first 700 m from Vaasantie also function as an accessible route.
The vegetation of Paukaneva is barren, typical of a mire: sphagnum and short sedge mire, as well as a fen and dwarf shrub fen. The birdlife in the mire is quite abundant. Among others, great and little curlews and many gull species nest in Paukaneva. During migration, the mire serves as a resting place for swans and geese.
The surrounding fields of Paukaneva, such as Pajuneva and the entire southwestern Alajokila basin, were brought into cultivation by burning the mires already in the 1700s. As a result of the famine years of the 1860s, there was an attempt to cultivate the entire Paukaneva. The Crown assisted with ditching the mire, but the work proved impossible due to the wetness of the mire. The area was also used for tar burning in the 1700s and 1800s. At the beginning of the 1700s, a boardwalk route was built at Paukaneva in connection with the Nurmo preach house. Along the boardwalk, people from Seinäjoki, who did not have their own church, were able to get to Nurmo. The boardwalk was destroyed in a large forest fire in 1752.
Boardwalk, lean-to shelter, and birdwatching tower have been built at Paukaneva with EU funding. The construction work was carried out by the Lakeuden Elämysliikunta association using so-called voluntary labor.
