The Partnach Gorge is one of the region’s most popular attractions, and for good reason: the trail through the gorge offers a spectacular natural spectacle. The Partnach rages wildly, foaming as it rushes through a rocky chasm into the valley, flanked by walls up to 80 meters high. The trail through the gorge has been delighting hikers and tourists since 1912. The Eckbauer is just a small hilltop in a meadow and would hardly be worth mentioning were it not for the fascinating view it offers right into the rocky heart of the Wetterstein Mountains. The descent leads across beautiful meadow slopes dotted with weather-beaten hay barns to Germany’s highest-altitude parish village. Wamberg is a picture-perfect Bavarian village with an onion-domed church tower and a cozy tavern.

Then we venture into the shady realm of rocks. The gorge trail runs along the rock faces for 700 meters. Just below, the Partnach surges against the rocks in white whirlpools. Water drips and trickles from above, so that hardly anyone stays dry. Finally, we leave the dim underworld behind and step back into the sunlight. Crystal-clear and ice-blue, the stream flows over smooth, rounded boulders above the gorge. We climb left up the wooded slope to the Vordergraseck (890 m), where beautifully situated inns invite us to stop for a break. After the first inn, the Kaiserschmarrnalm, you could take a short detour to the left down to the Iron
