The Island is fortunate in its abundance of woodlands, with the 1,100 acres of Parkhurst Forest being a mix of ancient woodland and plantation. The forest, classed as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, is rich in wildlife, including red squirrel, nightjar, and long eared owl. A gentle agricultural start takes us to the old Yarmouth to Newport railway line, passing Watchingwell Halt station before meandering down to enter the Forest at Tuckers Gate. We visit the red squirrel hide, and cross a delightful semi-open area in the heart of the forest. A series of footpaths with plenty of stiles, takes us to Porchfield and the Sportsman's Rest before returning over meadows. Rating 3. Time 3h 6m. Distance 14.5kms. Ascents 210m. Descents 210m.
