A hike via Ottenbach, which can be done in about four hours without walking in the snow. It leads on forest roads and partly unmarked trails up to the Alpkogel. If there is no snow, it is best to descend to the wine path and then return to the starting point on forest roads. Snowshoes are strongly recommended in snow, which unfortunately we did not use.

From the road in Trattenbach, it goes about 700 meters uphill to Ottenbach. There, follow the forest road to the left and in case of snow it is best to go after the second hairpin turn in a left curve through forest clearings to the Alpkogl hut. Continue about 650 meters north at the trail junction straight ahead and then after 100 meters, keeping slightly left in the forest, uphill to the Alpkogel. From there, shortly after, go right down a forest clearing crossing six paths to a forest road leading to the right. At a logging area left of the following ditch, go down past a hunting stand to Ottenbach and from there back to the starting point.
