From Popradské pleso, you can clearly see the steep switchbacks that wind through a striking gully all the way up to the saddle below Ostrva. But not everyone dares to set out for it, because it’s a really steep climb for an hour! This could be a good test of mettle for some—perhaps even for our “over-the-top” boys, who have so far experienced nothing but pure fun in the mountains. But the reward awaiting you at the summit on a clear day is truly magnificent: you can see almost the entire Mengusovská dolina with its jewel of a lake, Popradské pleso, and above all the nearby high valley Zlomisková dolina, over which the Vysoká (2,560 m) majestically towers like a true Tatra queen. And what does “Ostrva” or “Osterwa” actually mean? Nothing other than “wooden tripod,” on which you can, for example, dry hay.
From the Popradské Pleso Mountain Hotel, we follow the red-marked Tatra Magistrale, first walking around the northern shore of the lake and then crossing a wooden bridge over the Ľadový potok stream—which flows down from the Zlomisková dolina high valley—to a fork in the trail. Here, turn left and climb steeply up the northwest flank of Ostrva via 28 switchbacks to the Sedlo pod Ostrvou saddle at 1,966 m. There’s already a magnificent view from here, but it’s worth climbing the nearby (5-minute) summit of Ostrva. Back on the red-marked main trail, the route climbs briefly up the southern flank of Tupá, then continues on a long, gently undulating and descending traverse across the slopes of Klin and Končistá to the wild and romantic Batizovské pleso lake, 1,884 m, below the southwest cliffs of Gerlach. From here, head south, following the yellow trail markers, downhill and through the Štôlska dolina valley to the TEŽ train station in Vyšné Hágy.
