Ossiacher Gorge Path
South of Lake Ossiach, the heavily forested ridge of the Ossiacher Tauern rises. It slopes relatively steeply towards Lake Ossiach. The Rappitschbach, which flows from the Tauern Pond down to the lake, has created a small gorge here, through which a narrow, steep path leads. Over numerous bridges, on steps and a steel staircase, it goes up to the secluded Tauern Pond. After rainfall – especially in spring – you can discover many fire salamanders in the Rappitschbach and on its bank.
In the immediate vicinity of the Rappitsch bus stop, next to the bridge over the Rappitschbach, you can see a signpost with the inscription “Gorge path/Tauern Pond, 1½ h, path 63a”. A hiking trail takes us up to a bridge marking the beginning of the gorge path, 545 m (WW). The narrow, partially constructed path now remains always very close to the idyllic babbling Rappitschbach. Some high steps are somewhat laborious to overcome. We cross the brook on some bridges and footbridges. Wooden ladders facilitate the ascent at some points. We cross a first forest road, approx. 795 m, and shortly after, after climbing a steel staircase, a second forest road, approx. 830 m. Then follows a passage (not for the very stout!) between two large rocks. Then the terrain becomes gentler. We pass ruins and soon reach the Tauern road; behind it lies the quiet Tauern Pond in a hollow, 890 m. Before the return, I recommend a few minutes’ walk to the left to the “Tauern Chapel”, a small subsidiary church
