Between the dune ruins by the North Sea and the duck decoys at the Wadden Sea stretches a gently hilly, open dune area with a mix of heathland, pastures, and a peculiar birch forest.
From the bus stop in Oosterend, we walk a bit towards West-Terschelling and turn right into the first path (Lijkweg). At the edge of the dune, after passing a stairway on the left, we soon reach a worthwhile viewpoint. Where the sand path diverges from the bike path, we turn right into the dunes (brown sign: Staatsbosbeheer) and ignore all side paths. We come to a crossing sand path, which we follow to the right. At a fork, we choose the right path, which now leads us through gently rolling heath, cross a bike path, and ignore two left turnoffs. Our path makes a right turn after a left curve and then leads to an intersection from where a bridle path goes off to the right. However, we go left, where a footpath leads us to sand dunes, which we can cross straight ahead to the beach; it is nicer to wander a bit wild through the sand dunes on the right and later reach the beach pavilion Heartbreak Hotel on the right at the beach.Behind the pavilion, we choose the paved dune crossing.
