In the chalk cliffs, an underground river has carved out a cave system about 750 meters long, home today to thousands of bats. Unusually, there are two entrances. This cave system forms the core of the Onferno Nature Park. Until modern times, it was suspected to be the entrance to hell, as air flows out of the cave in certain conditions. The place was therefore called "Inferno." In 1811, the Bishop of Rimini supposedly ordered the name change to Onferno. During World War II, the Gothic Line, a German defensive line, ran here. Onferno was completely destroyed in the fighting and rebuilt further down the valley. Since about 1990, new life has returned to the rock.
At the Onferno info center, we cross the road and hike uphill following the red and white markings of trail 011, passing the driveway to the castle. After about 15 minutes at the Ca’ Bernardo farm, we turn sharply left at the shed and continue ascending on the path for 30 minutes to a fork on a plateau. From the right comes an unpaved path from Monte Croce, 553 m; we, however, continue straight from Romagna into the Marche. To our right, we see the village of Piandicastello with its pointed church tower. Shortly afterwards, on the right by the path, stands a human-height tower offering space for four Madonnas, one for each cardinal direction. The statues are missing.We walk on the narrow path, soon bordered by bushes on both sides, straight to the Piandicastello cemetery and then take the access road to the right to the church.
