On the Sentier des Douaniers to Tour Santa Maria
The coastal path Sentier des Douaniers (old customs officers' path) connects Macinaggio and Centuri at the northern tip of Corsica. Since the entire route takes about 8 hours and there is no suitable bus connection from Centuri to Macinaggio, we limited ourselves to one of the most beautiful stages on the old customs officers' path: the fantastic coastal hike from Macinaggio to the Genoese tower "Tour Santa Maria".
The round towers distributed along the Corsican coast, known as Genoese towers, were built from the mid-16th century by the Genoese against the North African Muslim pirates. About 67 of them still stand today and act as silent witnesses of a long-past warlike era on Corsica. However, the coastal landscape at Cap Corse offers not only warlike sights but also impressive macchia contrasted with the refreshing blue tones of the Mediterranean Sea. Above all, it invites you to a refreshing swim, which simply belongs when hiking along the Corsican coast. A true pleasure for body, mind, and soul! We start the hike at the port of Macinaggio. Tips: Here is also the landing point for the excursion boat, which runs between Macinaggio and Barcaggio during the season. At this time, it is advisable to return from Barcaggio to Macinaggio by boat (see route after Tour Santa Maria at the end of the description / pre-booking required). Along the main road D80 the first stage leads towards Rogliano
