High paths with sea views, the gray rocks of the Karst mountains, romantic castles on steep cliffs, and a lively port city with magnificent palaces and historic coffee houses. This is pleasure hiking in the northeasternmost corner of Italy. The poet Rainer Maria Rilke, who stayed as a guest of the Princes of Thurn and Taxis in their castle Duino near Trieste in 1911/12, already liked this. On extended walks he found inspiration for the verses of his "Duino Elegies." The "Sentiero Rilke" is a hiking route in honor of the poet. It leads from Sistiana along the coast to the castle Duino. On the left the sea and the steep cliffs, on the right bushes and wild macchia. A lovely contrast is then the beautiful castle garden of Duino, a stunning view from the tower over walls and balustrades; and then, as Rilke writes, when you "step out of all the secure gates, the empty Karst rises, no less impassable than the sea."
