The extensive area around the Loferer Alm, one of the largest Pinzgau Alm areas, has a centuries-old tradition and is praised in advertising as "Austria's most beautiful hiking Alm." It offers a range of easy hiking trails ("blue") up to the via ferrata ("black"). Depending on fitness levels, everyone can put together a suitable tour menu on the Loferer Alm. Currently, besides an Alm playground, there is a scenic and Alm-historical adventure path as well as seven signposted circular hiking routes, each requiring between 40 minutes and 3½ hours, which are presented on picture and overview boards on-site. Our hiking suggestion starts at the mountain station and ends at the mid-station of the Loferer Almbahn. It connects several circular trails into a large loop, which can be exited multiple times but can also be extended with additional well-described variants.
Sunny alpine meadows, two artificial storage ponds, and scenic grassy peaks with the Grubhörndl as the highest point of the Loferer Alm characterize the hike. From the summits, you get a good overview of the Alm area and enjoy a charming panorama with the Loferer Steinberge, the peaks around the Sonntagshorn, and the mountain massif of the Reiteralm above the Saalach valley.
The Loferer Alm can be reached either via a winding, partly narrow toll road or by a cable car in two sections.
From the mountain station of the Loferer Almbahn II, we cross to the adjacent Soderkaser and the Alm road. We walk briefly downhill on it until a sign before the Family Express points right to the "Grubhörndl Loop." Behind a hut, it goes left from a ditch over alpine pastures and through small forest sections to a small road leading up from the guesthouse Schönblick, which will later serve as the descent route. Here begins our summit loop over the Grubhörndl: uphill left – downhill right. Our path passes left by a cattle shelter and straight ahead to a snow fence (ski slope). At its upper end begins the north path, which leads right over rock-strewn dwarf pine terrain to a forepeak and to the Grubhörndl. The descent goes right from the summit cross through dwarf pines and forest southwards over the Lachfeldschneid to a snow fence and then sharply right along the slope down to the start of the summit loop. On the forest road, we can hike quickly in a wide arc down to the guesthouse
