This is a hike for the route series "Excursion into the Past." We guide you to archaeological sites in and around Augusta Raurica. Experience on site how much today's life is based on cultural heritage and why it is important to know the past. The hike thrives on an extraordinarily diverse retrospective of human history, at least for the past 2,000 years.

On this short hike through Augusta Raurica, we discover how – without steel, electricity, and fossil fuels – building engineering solutions were found through skill and ingenuity that amaze the modern observer.

The route on the topic of construction technology in Roman times only takes us over short distances, as the focus here is primarily on intensive observation and discovery of details on the ancient buildings. You will find that once you recognize construction details, you will repeatedly discover them in various forms.

Starting at the Taberna, we go to the opposite Theater Neun Türme. We approach the building from the rear side.

Via a staircase, the foundation of the building can be reached. From the theater, we make our way towards the Roman animal park. There was the southeastern entrance to the colonia in Roman times.

From the animal park, we stroll along the Violenbach stream to Rheinstrasse. There we turn left and reach the protective structure built above the industrial complex in Schmidmatt. We continue along Rheinstrasse and then turn left into Giebenacherstrasse to return to the upper town. After visiting the Roman house, we head towards the well house. On the right side of the path, which leads down from the forum into the small valley of the Violenbach, rises the retaining wall above the basilica.

Following the path further, we reach a second Roman-era private building at the slope of the Violenried, which can be visited in Augusta Raurica. Circling the Curia, we return via a staircase back to the forum, from where we make our way to the bus stop Augst, where this route ends.
