In the past, when Königssee and Obersee still formed a single entity, the recommended hike here would not have been possible. But today it is one of the most popular in the Berchtesgadener Land. A beautiful introduction is provided by the varied boat ride on the Königssee. The path leads into a high alpine landscape and can still be managed without great effort.
After the boat crossing from Königssee, we hike from the landing stage Salet southwards along the wide and marked path initially along the upper end of the Königssee – on the left the alpine restaurant Saletalm – then cross the inflow from the Obersee coming into the Königssee on a bridge and reach a fork in the path. The right path leads up the Sagerecksteig to the Kärlingerhaus (a challenging tour), the left takes us past the small Mittersee to the west shore of the Obersee and guides us through the rock debris from the 1172 landslide, which separated the Obersee from the Königssee. We now hike on the right side of the lake, directly under the cliffs of the Walchhüttenwand on a secured path to the Fischunkelalm at the upper end of the Obersee. From the Fischunkelalm there is the option to detour to the Röthbach Waterfall: We follow the marked path further southeast, gently ascending through forest until, beyond a small saddle, we reach the valley end surrounded by steep rocks.
