Safety information
Proper behavior in the mountains
- Careful route planning based on descriptions and hiking maps is essential for the success of a mountain tour.
- It is equally important to correctly assess the mountain experience, fitness, surefootedness, freedom from dizziness, and resilience of all participants.
- Never leave marked hiking trails and avoid shortcuts.
- Before hiking, inform yourself about weather conditions and return to the valley if the weather deteriorates.
- The mountains are for everyone. Helping to maintain their cleanliness and preservation is every hiker’s duty. Take your rubbish down and protect the animal and plant life.
- Always keep dogs under control and on a short leash. If an attack by a grazing animal is impending, immediately unleash the dog.
- Austrian farmers make an important contribution to preserving our alpine landscape. Visitors are asked to respectfully adapt to this beautiful landscape.
- Respect the people working here, nature, and animals.
Here are the most important emergency numbers in Austria in case of an accident:
140 Alpine emergency
144 Rescue emergency
112 European emergency number (reachable from all networks. Turn off the mobile phone and after turning it on, instead of the PIN dial the number "112")

The UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Carinthian Nockberge
Majestic, mighty, and unique – the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Carinthian Nockberge is an alpine jewel with unique natural treasures, a diverse cultural landscape, and rare animal and plant species. For centuries, people have lived here in harmony with nature. Gently rolling hills with peaks above 2400 meters and picturesque alpine meadows – the Biosphere Reserve Carinthian Nockberge is a rare natural idyll in the midst of the Austrian Alps and covers an area of around 500 square kilometers.
It was designated a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 2012. The park is based on the three pillars of sustainability: ecological balance, economic security, and social justice. Life here is in harmony with nature, and the rare animal and plant world is respected and cherished.
Regional products processed according to old traditions testify to careful work based on traditional recipes. Trained biosphere reserve rangers promise unforgettable tours for families, and several educational programs pass this knowledge on to schoolchildren. No matter what season you visit, the biosphere reserve always offers a filled treasure chest of experiences.

Roadbook
From the Neue Bonner Hütte I initially follow a slight descent along the wide track that first leads east in the Laußnitztal towards Rennweg. After about 800 m I reach a junction. Here I head towards Ebenwald-Laußnitzer Hütte: at first, it's a fairly gentle climb on forest path No. 113 up to the Ebenwaldhöhe. At the fork, I stay on my path and go straight ahead, first downhill and then a little steeper uphill to the rustic Laußnitzer Hütte (note: limited opening times). From here, path No. 113 leads up to the idyllic Laußnitzsee, which I then follow further along its eastern shore. Now there is a steeper ascent for a while and then a gentle incline (turn left at the fork) up to the Schwarzwand (2214m), which represents the highest point of the hut crossing.
I now walk more or less along the wonderful height ridge (always following path No. 113) just below the Gmeinnock (2,130m), passing by nameless mountain lakes to the beautifully located Anderleseen. It continues over the Kameritzhöhe (2,167m) to the Gaipahöhe (2,192m). Here I leave the height ridge and descend about 180 vertical meters down the meadow path to a track.
I follow this about 150 m to the left (east) and then immediately turn into the hiking trail leading down to the right. I walk down this diagonally left for about 100 vertical meters, until just before a reservoir lake I reach a track. I then turn sharply right on this and follow it in switchbacks downhill towards Innerkrems. About 100 vertical meters above Innerkrems, depending on the location of the chosen hotel, I have the option to turn right to the lower part of the village or left to the upper part of Innerkrems.

Equipment
How demanding is the Nockberge-Trail hiking route?
Easy to moderate. Technically, the Nockberge-Trail is not very difficult. There are no fixed rope sections or exposed passages requiring total freedom from dizziness. Even if you often move at altitudes up to 2,350 m and include many peaks, there are no technical difficulties. A certain surefootedness – the ability to move safely and swiftly on terrain – is required.
Important prerequisites for the success of a mountain tour, besides careful study of guidebooks and maps, are optimal equipment.
Basic equipment includes:
- solid, well-fitting mountain or hiking boots with grippy soles
- water- and wind-repellent mountain clothing in layers, hiking poles
- sunglasses, sun protection
- mobile phone and hiking map
- a first aid kit
- as well as adequate drinks and a snack
