Historic Hiking at Wechsel

With this hike, you not only get to know an impressive natural area in the northeast of Styria, but also learn interesting facts about the history of the Wechsel region. From the Middle Ages to industrialization, so-called forest glassworks were an important part of glass production. These glassworks were built in densely forested, sparsely populated regions. The so-called "Old Glassworks", which was located near the trail, ceased operation around 1745 due to the scarcity of quartz sand in the area and the enormous wood demand for glass production. More detailed information can be found on the information board along the trail, which is part of the Historical Long-Distance Trail Wechselland. The more recent history is encountered at the memorial cross at Niederwechsel, which commemorates the thousands of soldiers who lost their lives here in 1945.

Shortly before the end of Tränktörl village, 1009 m, we turn right between garages and houses uphill and see a yellow signpost and the location board "Tränktörl" at the forest edge. We pass a wooden building and terraced ponds, continue uphill following path 928 until we reach a forest road and then turn right towards Vorauer Schwaig (trail 927). A leisurely ascent follows, during which we can already see the Schwaig building. After a break at Vorauer Schwaig, 1509 m, we continue in a line uphill across the alpine pasture to Niederwechsel, 1669 m. A scenic path section follows over the ridge towards the east. We continuously descend further through the forest. Shortly before the top station of the panoramic cable car, a steeper section must be overcome: the
