Author’s recommendation
Obersteinbach is under the motto "Feasting and Overnight Stay". There are very good restaurants here.
The Vieux-Windstein and Neuf-Windstein ruins should both be visited.

Roadbook
From the starting point, our path led about 400 m east along Rue Principale to the intersection. Here we found the GR 53 Red Rectangle marker again, which we followed right through Rue de la Glockengrube. Straight ahead we soon entered the forest and reached the Col du Wittschloessel. We did not follow the detour to the Wittschloessel, as according to the Rother hiking guide it is sparse, inaccessible remains.
Following the Red Rectangle marker, we continued over Col de Wineckerthal, Col du Petit Gruenenberg, Lindenkopf and down to the Vieux-Windstein ruins (a short climb before) which we visited.
Another descent led us to the Auberge aux deux Châteaux (refreshments and overnight stay possible). After another small climb following the red-white-red rectangle marker, we reached the Neuf-Windstein ruins, which we also visited.
After descending from the ruins, we soon returned to the GR 53 Red Rectangle marker and followed it to Wineckerthal. Following the red rectangle on the other side of Schwarzbach, we entered the forest and shortly after arrived at the Buchwald forestry house. After a longer ascent on a well-marked path, we reached the Chalet du Wintersberg, a hut of the Vosges club where we stopped. Opposite, signposts indicate the final climb to the Grand Wintersberg. The observation tower offers a great panoramic view.
South of the tower, the GR 53 marker continues down to the valley (Falkensteinerbach) and past the Celtic spring to Niederbronn-les-Bains.
