The castle hills of the Falkenstein and Schauenburg ruins, as well as the Hessenturm visible from everywhere on the pointed Niedensteiner Kopf, form the corner points for a varied circular hike on the sprawling Langenberg, the so-called Hessengau.
It is best to start the tour in Niedenstein at the bus stop in front of the Wiehoffbach Bridge, where the E marking leaves the town westwards on the Altenburger Weg towards the Altenburg hiking parking lot. From there, turn right onto Habicht and climb a distinct steep curve up a prominent terrain shoulder (beautiful view of Niedenstein). On the plateau, you will reach the ramparts of Altenburg, a prehistoric hill fort city. Further along the ridge, descend to a shelter and then steeply ascend on a narrow footpath to the ruins of the medieval Falkenstein Castle (wall remnants, shelter, views, information board). From the castle hill, you have to descend steeply again, then take X7 to the left, pass under the steep cliffs of Falkenstein, reach the next shelter, and finally head straight to the Falkenstein hiking parking lot.
