For a long time, Negoiu was considered the highest mountain of the Carpathians, depending on perspective it might even be the highest in Transylvania. On this hike, the Făgăraș reveals its wild side. Via the eastern flank of Piscul Șerbotei, we reach the funnel-shaped Sărății Valley using numerous bridges and ladders of the so-called Dragon's Trail, and climb steeply past the waterfall to the rock sea of the Cleopatra Saddle. Passing the Cleopatra Needle and the small Negoiu Wall, we climb the second highest Carpathian peak from the south side.
From Cabana Negoiu, 1546 m, past the campsite, we reach a fork (south), take the path at the first branching to the left initially gently downhill. A detailed description is unnecessary here, as for 25 minutes we steadily ascend numerous boardwalks, metal ladders, clamps, and wire rope-secured passages into the Sărății Valley. Going upstream, we leave a shepherd's shelter behind at moderate incline, reach a signpost, walk to the stream, the Pârâul Sărății, 1725 m, and wade across to the opposite bank. The glacier-formed terrain unfolds before us in all its harsh beauty. We turn east, climb the funnel-shaped slope through a damp spring area, gaining height quickly on a rocky, distinct path. Approaching a waterfall, we continue climbing at varying distances parallel to the mountain brook. After 1.5 hrs, we arrive at Piatra Brânzului, 2097 m.
