The Kårvatn farm in upper Todalen has been a classic starting point for mountain hikes in the Trollheimen Mountains since the 19th century. But above all, Todalen was known to the English fly-fishing upper class as a salmon haven. A historical testimony to this era stands in Todalen: the Todalshytta, currently operated by the DNT.
Our short tour leads to the Nauståfossen waterfall, which thunders down the rocks with a drop of 110 m and can already be seen from the farm in the distance. Those who want to hike longer can follow the T-markings further towards Trollheimshytta and will reach their destination after 28 km and just under 10 hours.
At the parking lot in Kårvatn signs point left towards "Nauståfossen/Trollheimshytta" to the bridge over the Toåa River, which flows through Todalen and a few kilometers further west empties into the Todalsfjord. On the last 8 km it is known as a salmon river. The Toåa originates in the Tovatna lake chain. The museum in the storehouse (stabbur) in front of the wooden bridge documents the history of the farm and the wildlife in the western Trollheimen Mountains. We initially hike along a track past the DNT hut, over the bridge and in a right bend to a fork. Here we turn right. The track leads between birches again to the Toåa and shortly before the Nauståa estuary, red markings point left onto a dam that takes us through a bog.At the end of the bog and dam, the route continues on a rooty forest path which soon changes into a trail and steeply ascends through the coniferous forest to Nauståfossen. The entire 110 m drop is not visible at any point as a rock ledge divides the waterfall:
