Nafplio, also called (ancient Greek) Nauplion, is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Greece. The town, with about 17,000 inhabitants, fascinates especially through its old town, which lies at the foot of a rock outcrop jutting into the Argolic Gulf. Narrow, flower-decorated alleys and spacious clean squares with buildings in the classical, Venetian, and Turkish styles characterize the appearance of the old town. Numerous taverns, cafes, ice cream parlors, and bars attract many domestic and foreign tourists to the city, which was the residence of the Wittelsbach Otto of Bavaria, the first Greek king, from 1833 to 1834. Our hike leads us from the old town to a large bay in the south of the town, which offers a picturesque chapel in a rock niche.
From the parking lot at the port of Nafplio, we hike first westward between the water and the old town and come across a wide footpath paved with polygonal slabs at the end of the harbor, which we follow directly along the water. We circle the promontory, pass a short tunnel broken through the rock, and reach a parking lot directly below the Palamidi fortress. Those who wish can climb up the steep stairway to the Palamidi fortress from here. The hiking trail continues close to the shore. About 500 m behind the parking lot, we reach a beautiful resting place with a spring. We continue hiking slightly uphill and downhill until we reach the small marina at the northwestern end of Karathona Bay. In the background, roughly in the middle of the bay, we can see the rock chapel, the destination of our hike.We continue along the bay, either on the road or on the sandy beach.
