Round Hiking Trail N8 Lerchenweg
or N8 past the NSG Hengstwiesen
Start and finish are at the information board on Bahnhofstraße opposite the Hotel Weinrich, Bahnhofstrasse 7, 34311 Naumburg.
Our recommendation: Hike counterclockwise from the information board.
From here, walk a few meters towards the Protestant church, then turn right into Mühlenweg, after approx. 340 m turn left into Steinweg and uphill about 190 m. Then turn right into Kiefernweg; on the right you now have a wonderful view of the Catholic church and the old town center on the slope of Burghain.
After about 200 m on Kiefernweg, switch to the left side of the street "Unter den Linden". In front of the small forest there is a signpost to the Fatima Grotto, which you reach via some steps into the forest area.
The N8 then leads you out of the woods again. In good visibility you have a wonderful view towards the northeast from here. The N8 marking now guides you some meters along the woods on the left side and soon lets you cross the street at Kuhberg towards the field. You walk this field path 1,000 m to the Hattenhäuser forest (the large forest area in sight).
Just before the forest edge, your path meets an asphalt road, which you follow right towards the forest. You pass a bridge and after a few meters the N8 turns left uphill on a hollow way. It merges into the N7, the Fairyland Trail (M) and the Edersee Trail (E). You now follow these markings on the left to a paved road. Here the N7, the Fairyland Trail and the Edersee Trail turn left. Ignore the left turn and continue straight ahead.
After a few meters there is a hunting lodge on the right where a seating group invites you to rest. The N8 leads you into the forest and then turns left into a grass path that changes to a forest path. On the left side, somewhat lower, you can see the water of the lake of the NSG Hengstwiesen, past which the N8 will also lead later. Still on this upper forest path of the N8, you encounter the Habichtswaldsteig (Habichtskopf symbol). Here the N8 turns left and now together with the premium hiking trail Habichtswaldsteig goes slightly downhill, you cross a small creek (the Spole) and walk between fields to the railway tracks.
Follow the path along the railway tracks to the left towards Naumburg. After a few hundred meters, you see a lake on the left, the nature reserve "Hengstwiesen". A rest area on the Habichtswaldsteig with an information board offers a pause with a wonderful view. It is worth staying here a little longer. Opposite on the other shore of this lake you can see an observation hut that is worth visiting.
Further on, the N8 leads you past this NSG Hengstwiesen. Slightly uphill, you now see the rails of the historic museum railway Hessencourrier and walk on a grass path along these rails on the left side towards Naumburg.
Our special recommendation: At the level of the railway crossing, 100 steps left with a view of the lake, you will reach the observation hut that helps to admire the waterfowl world.
After about 300 meters this grass path merges into an asphalt road marked N7, Fairyland Trail (M), and E for Edersee Trail.
Follow these markings on the left side of the Hessencourrier railway tracks and after about 500 m discover on the right the historic station of the former Kassel-Naumburg narrow-gauge railway, which is now used as a railway museum. On the left you see the guest house.
You are now on Hattenhäuser Weg and continue until the junction with Bahnhofstraße, then turn right, continuing along the N8 marking. Here you cross Bahnhofstraße and walk about 120 m downhill further to the level of the historic railway station; on the right side, you see a bus stop. Now turn left into the street Am kleinen Berg (markings N8 and R4). On this asphalt road, walk 280 m and just before the bridge over the Elbe creek turn left and walk about 100 meters past a small wooded hill.
The N8 hiking trail then turns right, runs a few meters together with the H8, N1 and N2, over a metal bridge (Elbe creek), and past the EDEKA market.
The N8 leads after crossing Ippinghäuser Straße now left towards the old town and after a few meters right below the cemetery. At the end of this cemetery (cemetery gate), cross the street to the left, after a few meters right and again left (please follow the markings).
Now you can see the Protestant church again and after crossing the street Im Hain and the bridge over the Elbe, you have reached the information board and at the same time your starting point of this hike.
