Picturesque mountain lake in the Stubai valley end

The innermost Stubai valley has undoubtedly experienced landscape impairments due to the glacier ski area. Away from these interventions and the associated tourist hustle, however, we find the Mutterberger See, a magical gem that makes us even more aware of the great importance of nature and landscape protection in the sensitive high mountain environment. After about a three-hour ascent, we can indulge in the reflection of the glacier mountains and let our souls unwind a little…

If you start at the Mutterbergalm or the Stubai Glacier railway in the upper area, you can first visit the Mutterberger Klamm directly, then descend a few minutes beyond the stream to meet the access from below (this starts without a sign at the road bridge). Now uphill in the mountain forest, occasionally close to the roaring stream again, somewhat indistinctly marked across the meadows, then after crossing a first side stream, turn right. We gain height partly through larch terrain, cross the previously crossed stream again (where it forms a cascade) at about 2060 m, and reach a terrain balcony above the terrain threshold. Here turn left and head over the grounds with two stream crossings towards a steeper slope. This brings us close to the Hohe Grube and after a short descent we meet the Stubai high trail. This is soon left again to tackle the last ascent to the Mutterberger See, 2483 m.Passing the east shore, we descend on a different line back to the Stubai high trail and follow

Profile picture of Mark Zahel Author Mark Zahel
