The highest mountain of Imst

The best-known peaks around Imst are called Tschirgant, Laggers, and – not least – Muttekopf. As a genuine gray colossus, its appearance is always massively impressive and thus a typical calling card of the Lechtal Alps. The ascent already promises a serious mountain tour, yet on a marked path it is reliably guided over terrain-related obstacles. From the upper level, a magnificent panorama offers itself, although I do not know what I should admire more: the diverse limestone Alps world or the dazzling glacier mountains on the southern horizon, which mainly belong to the Ötztal Alps.

From the mountain station at Alpjoch, follow the ridge edge onto the Drischlsteig, to the nearby viewing platform and further along the elaborately constructed path across the rotten, rocky slopes. After crossing a stream, you will soon arrive at the Muttekopfhütte, 1934 m. Here, take route no. 621/622 westwards and hike for a while through the harmless grassy terrain of the Schaflanne, before it becomes noticeably rockier after the fork at 2309 m. Keep to the right, entering an area of scree fields where the path is partly muddy, and climb higher on clear trail traces along the steep slope. Before the exit to the Muttekopfscharte, 2630 m, wire ropes assist over brittle, downward-layered slabs. Finally, near the ridge towards the summit, ignoring the turnoff to Hanauer Hütte, ascend the broad scree ridge without further obstacles up to Muttekopf, 2774 m.The return route follows the same path, with some uphill sections on the Drischlsteig. Alternatively, descend from the hut to the

Profile picture of Mark Zahel Author Mark Zahel
