Murnau, the economic and cultural center of the "Blue Land," did not get its name by chance, as it lies between "muorigen Auen" and the shallow Staffelsee. And besides the lake, the Murnauer Moos is the real sensation, with an area of over 30 km², one of the largest intact moorlands in Central Europe.
The Murnauer Moos owes its formation to the action of the Loisach Glacier, which during the Würm glaciation extended far into the Alpine foothills and gradually retreated into the Alps during the Late Glacial (16,000 years ago), leaving lateral and terminal moraines behind. A deep basin carved by the ice was also left behind. Initially, a large lake formed here, which gradually silted up from rock deposits from the surrounding mountains.
The Murnauer Moos is a fascinating biotope with a rich diversity of plant and animal species. Here you can discover numerous rare plants such as sundew, Siberian iris, bog rush and saxifrage, lady's slipper orchid, autumn coralroot orchid, and the bug orchid. Of the total 964 plant species, no less than 164 are listed on the Red List!Over 50 species of dragonflies have been recorded in the biotope. The Murnauer Moos is also considered one of the most important meadow breeding bird areas in southern Germany, with the best observation period from mid-May to mid-June. The corn crake, although represented in the moor by about 50 calling males, is rarely seen. However, in the morning its distinctive rasping call can be heard—a reason to undertake the moor walk early in the day.The moor circular hike starts at the hiking parking lot, 624 m, leads on asphalt to Gasthaus Ähndl and to the nearby Ramsachkirche, which is considered the oldest church in the region but today presents itself with
