Munt Baselgia ("Kirchberg") is an extensive area with several summits, one of which already offers a beautiful view at 2682 m - a well worthwhile destination for anyone who wants to shorten the tour. The Macun lake district, which lies on the onward route to Lavin (see variant), became part of the national park in 2000 - 86 years after it was founded on August 1, 1914. The view from Munt Baselgia down to Macun is particularly beautiful, and the descent over these lakes to Lavin is a highlight of the national park.
The beauty of Zernez does not become apparent when you drive through, but it does when you climb up from the center to the slightly higher church on our hike. The large number of beautiful Engadine houses is surprising! The church and the old church of San Sebastian (right next to it, with Gothic frescoes) are also worth seeing. From the church, we reach a fork in the path and follow the sign for "Munt Baselgia". We gain height through the forest on a footpath that runs alongside the alpine road and crosses it again and again. Finally, follow the road to the edge of the forest and a hairpin bend - the "Munt-Taxi" takes you here. Continue briefly on the road until a signpost points to the left. Through the avalanche barriers in the south-west flank to a magnificent viewpoint at 2682 m altitude. Due to its advanced position, this insignificant hump already offers beautiful views of the Upper Engadin, Grialetsch group and peaks in the national park and is a worthwhile alternative
