Roadbook
From the Arsenhaus we now turn left. Passing a marked tree we follow the educational trail in wide bends uphill. Attractively designed information boards provide us with information about the natural history features of the Mur valley. Our path is accompanied by the Rotgüldenbach, which springs from the Rotgüldensee. Rest benches invite you to linger, and again and again we are rewarded with lovely views down the valley. After about 50 minutes of walking, you can see the Rotgüldensee hut hidden on the right between larches, and suddenly the Lower Rotgüldensee, a reservoir, lies before us. Magnificent mountain peaks rise around it, including at the end of the lake the 3076m high Hafner, the easternmost 3000m peak of the Alps. Along a dam path you now reach the Rotgüldensee hut, located at 1735m, which was built by the Alpine Club in 1992-94, in a few minutes. It invites you to strengthen yourself and enjoy this impressive panorama. Above the steep step that rises at the end of the lake, we already see the basin in which the Upper Rotgüldensee lies. Across a wooden bridge, you continue hiking along the lake through lush mountain meadows, which in places are overgrown with green alders. On the left, a stream that springs from the upper lake falls over rocks in widely fanned water bands. After about 30 minutes you reach the end of the Lower Lake.
Those who are not sure-footed and free from dizziness should turn back here!
The path to the Upper Rotgüldensee now leads in small switchbacks over the rocky steep step into the core zone of the Hohe Tauern National Park. Over wooden ladders, secured rock ledges and channels, past Swiss stone pines that majestically crown narrow rock ledges, you reach your destination about an hour’s walking time from the Rotgüldensee hut.
