Muggesfelder See Loop Trail
Holsteinische Schweiz
The trail begins in the west, running along the Muggesfelder Moor before entering an alder swamp forest and continuing close to the lakeshore. In the southern section, the view opens up across the water, where a bench on the shore invites you to take a break while offering a view of the nearby Muggesfelde Estate. The trail then climbs slightly and continues along a forest road through a mixed forest dominated mainly by beech and spruce trees. Finally, the route reaches a road with little traffic, which it follows back toward the starting point. Along the way, at the Muggesfelde Estate, there is another view of the historic gatehouse and parts of the estate grounds.
Lake Muggesfelde itself covers an area of approximately 27.1 hectares, has an average depth of 9.6 meters, and reaches a maximum depth of 20.7 meters. Despite the small watershed, the calcium-rich water has a comparatively high nutrient content.
In the forested area bordering the lake to the southeast, there are a few older holly trees (Ilex aquifolium) that stand out botanically. The habitat also offers good opportunities for wildlife observation: black woodpeckers nesting in old beech trees leave behind cavities that are later occasionally used by stock doves.
