The hike from the north shore of the Almsee to the small but striking Ameisstein is less known than the route from the "Deutsches Haus" (southern shore). Both routes meet halfway and lead together to the highest point.
Author’s recommendation
The hike to the Ameisstein takes less than half a day. Therefore, it is worth attaching this route after climbing the (more challenging) Brandberg NW pillar (Almseeblick).

Safety information
Very easy hike. The only important thing is to always take the correct turn at intersections on the forest road. A good hiking map or a GPS device is helpful here.Tips and suggestions
The Almsee is the coldest lake in Upper Austria and a real natural paradise. Appropriate behavior in this natural environment is requested.Roadbook
From one of the two parking lots at the northern end of the lake (village Schwarzenbrunn) we first walk 400 meters on the asphalt road towards the valley end, until a forest road meets the Almsee federal road on the right (west).
We follow this forest road, which leads flat around the Ameisstein. At intersections, always take the left path and after about 1.9 kilometers you reach the well-frequented route coming up from the Deutsches Haus.
A short stretch on the forest road, then over the wooded southern ridge on a well-marked path with cairns to the summit cross on Ameisstein (776 m). The actual highest point is reachable from here in a few steps, from which you can also enjoy a better view of the Almsee.
Descent as ascent.

Equipment
Light hiking gear is sufficient. However, sturdy hiking boots with profiled soles are advisable for the summit ascent, as the forest terrain can sometimes be quite slippery.Localization
