Before leaving, we advise you to read the section Tips for hikers, to equip yourself properly, to take supplies, to check the weather, and to carry a charged phone. In any case, do not overestimate your strength. In the Jura, hikes take place on paths and trails on private properties that may also be used for other activities. Please respect the places by staying on marked trails and respecting other users (hikers, mountain bikers, riders, as well as forestry operators, winegrowers, shepherds…).
The Jura is a natural and wild department; please respect the environment you are in: Do not litter, do not make fires, do not pick wild flowers. Respect the tranquility of livestock and wildlife by keeping away from herds, keeping your dog on a leash, and closing gates behind you. Find out about biotope protection zones, nature reserves, or Natura 2000 areas where restrictions apply.
In case of forestry work (logging, skidding…), trail work (trail repair, clearing…), or hunting zones in progress or battues, for your safety, know when to give up and turn back.
Roadbook
The Notre-Dame de Mont Roland sanctuary is a major Marian pilgrimage site dating from the 11th century, located on the hill called "Mont-Roland" in Jouhe. For fifty years, it has hosted a pilgrimage dedicated to Our Lady of Fatima. It is located on the Way of St. James and is also the starting point for easy walks.
From this summit, hikers overlook Dole and admire the expanse of the Chaux forest, further away the Mont Blanc if weather permits, and on the other slope, the Saône plain extending to the Burgundy hills and Mont Afrique overlooking Dijon.
The interest of the few kilometers to be traveled is then to discover the floristic and faunistic richness of natural grasslands returned to grazing, the deciduous and coniferous woodlands, some traditional stone extraction sites, and also the Foulotière: a very beautiful spring with the ruins of an old mill.
