Selected alternatives for you
Mount Pelf is the third highest peak of the Belluno Dolomites and definitely the easiest. The strenuous ascent is rewarded by a long series of panoramic views, especially along the final long ridge.

From Case Bortot, take trail 501 towards the Settimo Alpini refuge and follow it just past the Mariano bridge where you take a right turn indicated Forcella Tanzon. From here take trail 507/511 which, almost flat, enters the Rui Fret valley. After about ten minutes, take trail 511 on the left while 507 continues in the valley towards Casera Palazza. The trail now climbs steeply in the woods with several turns, among the Vaia windthrows, crosses a clearing where there is a junction. Always keep left among the windthrows, climbing first rather steeply then with some traverses you exit the woods near Casera Medassa. Now climb through open slope first with wide turns, then more steeply. With a traverse to the right and a final ascent you reach the junction with trail 505, coming from the Settimo Alpini refuge, near Forcella Pis Pilon. Turn right, towards Forcella Caneva, first with a slight ascent, then descending overcoming two gulleys. Then climb again to a junction where on the right there is a rock with a red arrow indicating Pelf. The trail, always marked with red dots, climbs the canal descending from the Sass de Mel pass until reaching it. From here it follows for a long time the southeast ridge with steep and strenuous sections; it crosses beneath the anticlimb, overcomes a final rock jump aided by the presence of a fixed rope, and by following the long and panoramic ridge you reach the summit. The first part of the return is on the same route as the ascent up to the sign near Forcella Pis Pilon, then continue crossing the pass and reach the Settimo Alpini refuge along trail 505. From here take trail 501 to return to Case Bortot.

    Author’s recommendation

Given the significant elevation gain, the itinerary can be split into two days by reversing the direction of travel: on the first day, reach the Settimo Alpini refuge where you spend the night; on the second day, reach the summit of Pelf and return to the valley through Val Medassa.

    Safety information

The route, although steep, is not difficult; some sections (short) on rock are equipped with fixed ropes. It can present problems in case of snow or ice. On the descent from Forcella Pis Pilon, facing west, snow can be found until late in the season.
