The hike provides a very good insight into the ecological features of Skaftafell. The milder climate here encouraged early settlement - Skaftafell was not only a farm, but also a place of worship. Alongside birch and rowan trees, bellflower, wood cranesbill and angelica thrive. There is a great variety of insects, even butterflies can be found.
We walk from the visitor center in Skaftafell on a comfortable gravel path to the western edge of the campsite, then continue straight ahead on a narrower gravel path. After two bridges we come to a signpost at Lambhagi. We keep left, cross the access road and continue along the well-marked path over gravel surfaces, with several information boards explaining the nature and culture of the alluvial plain. The path crosses several dams to the bridge over the Morsá. We then follow the river for another 100 m to the next signpost, where the path turns west. The marked path is usually very easy to follow. It is fascinating to observe the different stones and erosion forms. After a good 1 hour through a partly desert-like landscape, the vegetation begins again with lupines and birch bushes; the view down into the valley to Morsárjökull gets better and better.
