The normal route up the "King of Stone "

"Re di Pietra", the King of Stone, as the Monviso is also known, is much more than just a mountain for the Piedmontese. It is a symbol and a myth, and standing on its summit at least once in a lifetime is a matter of prestige. However, the journey is long and unpredictable, as the Monviso is known for its unpredictable weather. It must be said in no uncertain terms: Climbing this mountain is basically beyond the scope of a hiking book, but its regal aura and commanding presence nevertheless secure its place. It is better to get your own impression of the situation on the normal route from a competent description than to set off unsuspectingly, as many people do - and often not only endanger themselves in the process. Only experienced, well-equipped alpinists or those in good physical condition on the rope of a mountain guide should attempt the Monviso.
The Monviso is an unparalleled eye-catcher, but unfortunately there are many, many days when it disappears into nothingness. The first clouds often appear as early as 10 a.m., and sometimes they grow more, sometimes less quickly into real monsters, which often erupt into thunderstorms in the afternoon. Occasionally, however, northerly winds break up this situation and bring incredibly clear days, although these also bring frosty temperatures. Be that as it may, the weather situation needs to be monitored closely, and of course it takes a bit of luck to be able to enjoy the Monviso in optimal conditions. In practice, mountaineers tend to take to the mountain in the early part of the year, around July - a time when the Monviso has not yet fully recovered from the winter, making the use of crampons necessary due to icing and snowfields. Ambitious mountain hikers, on the other hand, prefer to conquer the mountain in late summer in the hope of being able to do without additional equipment. Bivaccos, emergency shelters with comfortable mattresses and warm blankets, are available for those who can no longer make it back to the rifugio. In high summer, especially on sunny weekends, the mountain can be very busy. This can sometimes lead to traffic jams, especially in tricky places, and falling rocks are also a frequent occurrence. The route leads through crumbly rock, which makes the ascent seem arduous and almost endless. However, the breathtaking views and vistas make the effort fade into the background. Once you finally reach the summit, you can't help but be amazed. On a clear day, the view extends from Monte Rosa and the Matterhorn over the Maritime Alps to the Mediterranean.

From the Rifugio Quintino Sella, a very early start is recommended in any case. Descend briefly to the lake and take the path on the right, which climbs steeply to the southwest and in the upper part is a via ferrata to the Passo delle Sagnette, 2991 m (1 hour). Descend from the pass towards the Forciolline lakes, but soon keep right and cross northwards over boulders to the bottom of the cirque. Through this against the massive south face and onto the moraine wall of the Viso glacier marked with a large cairn. Keep right across the glacier terrace, which is completely covered with boulders, to the foot of the rocks. There, first along the edge, then sharply right in an easy scramble up to Bivacco Andreotti, 3225 m (1.30 hours). Shortly above, you have to ascend the small glacier field of the Ghiacciaio Sella. In midsummer there is often no snow in the upper part and you have to struggle through the loose scree slope until you reach the rock band, which you follow to the left. The
