Pleasant hike with a beautiful view of val Belluna and the Schiara group marked by the CAI 508 trail marker. It requires caution, in case of snow or ice, when accessing the summit via the steep final ridge.

From the Case Bortot parking lot, take a path on the left (asphalted for the first few meters) with indications for Monte Terne and continue on a good mule track passing some old huts. Continue in the forest with several turns until you reach a wide bend with a junction (loc. Casei, altitude 950 m.) in a spot with a magnificent view of val Belluna (bench on the right). Turn left (sign indicating Summit Terne) climbing a steep path passing in front of an old ruin (Casot de Gorio) and continuing into the forest which begins to thin out. The path continues evident and quite steep to a turn at the South ridge (possibility to continue directly but with greater difficulties) where it crosses left up to a short grassy ledge equipped with a metal cable. Now it continues with a series of tight curves in the final grassy section until it reaches the long and panoramic final ridge which is followed entirely with a magnificent view first over val Belluna, then the Ardo valley and finally the Schiara group. For the descent follow the ascent route paying attention on the steep section of the final ridge.

    Author’s recommendation

Follow the CAI trail markers carefully because, especially in the first part, there are many detours due to the ancient agricultural use. Seen from Belluno, at the first snowfalls, the summit resembles the head of a dog. In the early morning hours it is not uncommon to encounter wildlife or see an eagle.

    Directions

Case Bortot is a location about ten km from Belluno and is not reachable by public transport. From the city of Belluno take the Agordina state road to the Mussoi area, where you turn right towards Bolzano Bellunese (about 4 km so far). Continue to the right, entering the Ardo valley, first descending and then climbing on a narrow asphalt road passable only by cars. The road ends at Case Bortot at the parking described.
