When the high season is over, a bit of calm returns to Val Gardena and the autumn colors glow intensely, this route is something really special.

We start at the Daunei hiking parking lot in Wolkenstein and take trail no. 3 through woods and meadows up to the Juac Hut. Above the hut, trail no. 17 branches off. We continue left on a path visible in the grass but without markings. This path continues beneath the walls of Monte Stevia. We chose this path because it is more rustic and less frequented. The chance to see wildlife here is greater. An alternative is trail no. 3 to the Regensburger Hut.

    Fantastic panorama

Our highest goal today is already visible from afar, namely the Nadelscharte, also called Forcella da Piza. The gravel path no. 17b leads us upwards beneath the Dolomites walls and makes us sweat quite a bit. But the effort is rewarded at the top with a fantastic panorama.

We are in the heart of the Dolomite world, which lies at our feet.

Many peaks are familiar to us and in the autumn sun they are all clearly visible.

    Stop at the Stevia Hut

We now hike trail no. 17 across the slopes to the Stevia Hut.

A stop is recommended not only because of the beautiful panorama.

But be careful. Those who are there in late autumn should bring something to eat because the hut might be closed. After the short break, we go downhill until we reach a junction where trail no. 3 leads up to the Silvester Saddle. Once at the top, it goes steadily downhill until we reach the Juac Hut. This one is still open and a stop with the friendly hut keepers is definitely worthwhile. On a meadow next to the hut, there is a sundial reminding us to return. We then take the same path back to the parking lot. Before we reach it, we rest by a small, idyllic pond and let the impressions of this beautiful route pass by.

    Author’s recommendation

In late autumn, the colors are even more intense and the view clearer. Also, outside the high season, the Val Gardena offers an unexpected peace.

    Equipment

Autumn hikes always require lots of changes of clothing. We go from cold to warm, sun and shade, and the wind can often be biting in autumn. Bringing provisions is recommended at this time because the huts may already be closed and there might be no other places to stop.
