The grand face of Monte Schiara faces south, toward the sun-drenched expanse of the lower Piave Valley (Val Belluna). But anyone who hasn’t seen the Val Vescovà gorge and the meadow oasis “Pian de i Gat” there, anyone who has never gazed upon the magnificent northern cliffs of the massif from the Forc. di Lavaretta, doesn’t truly know this mountain! Follow Trail No. 518 on the right side of the inner Val Vescovà, passing below the Cas. della Valle, into the head of the valley, and from there up an avalanche valley; then ascend eastward through mountain pines and scrub and turn left into a shallow hollow. Climb through it in switchbacks to trail No. 514 (Dolomites High Trail No. 1) and follow it along the western slopes of C. della Scala to the right toward Casonet de Nerville, 1,641 m. Head southeast uphill across rocky meadows to a large
