The Monte Pelmo, rising isolated and directly from green alpine meadows, is considered one of the most massive and impressive rock giants of the Alps. No matter from which side you look at it, from everywhere, even from a greater distance, the noble form and the immense mass of this magnificent stone structure fascinate. No wonder that Pelmo was the first Dolomite summit to be climbed for tourism. After brave hunters had previously penetrated through ledges into the large south-eastern cirque of the mountain, John Ball succeeded in the first ascent alone in 1857. The route over the "Ballband" has since been one of the most popular normal routes in the Dolomites. It requires sure-footedness, a head for heights, endurance, and some climbing experience due to its length and exposure.
