Those looking for an easily accessible panoramic peak near the Giaupass will find such a mountain gem in the south of the Croda-da-Lago group: the Mondeval. The simple and short access path via the notch Forcella di Giau leads to a gently undulating high meadow plateau. Passing the picturesque lake and through dense alpine rose bushes, we reach the cross-adorned summit of Mondeval, which offers a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of the heroes of the Ampezzo, Agordo and Zoldo Dolomites.
From Passo di Giau, take path no. 436 on the north slope of Punta di Zonia over meadows eastward to a saddle, then gently descending into Forc. di Zonia, 2233 m. Beyond, along the steep grassy western flank of Col Piombin (caution at a sandy spot!) level to Forc. di Piombin, 2239 m (here the path to Monte Cernera branches off). Beyond the notch, descending southeast on rock-strewn grassy slopes into the upper Val Cernera. The green valley basin curves left downhill to the east, later going over crystalline rock to the lowest path point, 2170 m, and briefly rising to the left junction of the path from Val Costeana. To the right the no. 436 path ascends southeast through a steep green hollow in switchbacks, then later climbs in steep scree terrain into Forc. di Giau, 2360 m, between Lastoni di Formin to the east and Cernera group to the west.
